About Us

Rebuilding Together is the nation’s leading organization bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners by providing free repair services for those with the greatest need. Low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, displaced or disabled, and families with children are most at risk. Rebuilding Together responds to their needs through four specific practice areas: Safe & Healthy Homes, Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction, Veterans Housing, and National Rebuilding Day ensure that homeowners live in safe, warm and dry homes.

Rebuilding Together began in 1973, when volunteers in Midland, Texas decided to devote one day in April to repairing and sprucing up the dilapidated homes of low-income, disabled and elderly neighbors in their community. By 1982, the program had reached the Washington, D.C. area, where volunteers included Cabinet members, White House staff, and other national figures. With a commitment to spread the program to every state, Rebuilding Together’s national headquarters was launched in 1988. Rebuilding Together continues to grow as volunteers’ pour forth to transform homes and neighborhoods in scores of communities nationwide. Today, the organization operates with 235 affiliates nationwide, works in 1,800 communities, and brings together more than 272,000 volunteers annually to preserve and revitalize 10,000 houses and non-profit facilities.

Rebuilding Together’s sustainable community impact has been demonstrated by the more than 100,000 homes and non-profit facilities that have been repaired with the help of 2.7 million volunteers giving 27 million hours of volunteer time. This work was delivered at a market value of more than $1 billion.
Rebuilding Together operates on year-round basis. The organization is known for its annual signature event, National Rebuilding Day. This event occurs on the last Saturday of April and is the culmination of a year of planning, evaluating, training, organizing, and assembling the largest nationwide group of volunteers, from all walks of life, to repair and restore houses and non-profit facilities, revitalize entire communities, and make a lasting impression on those families and individuals who are helped.

Through its national network of affiliates, hundreds of thousands of volunteers, corporate sponsors, numerous partnerships among business, industry, trade associations, governmental and city agencies, Rebuilding Together is committed to tackling the needs of low-income homeowners – one house – one community - at a time.
